We often get asked by customers, “What devices do I need to get started with an Ajax system?” This article recommends which Ajax devices you can use to begin building your world-class alarm system.
Start with the Ajax hub
The Ajax Hub is the “control centre” of the system. Ajax offers three different types of Hubs, but for most South African homes, we suggest the Hub 2 (4G). For further information on the Hubs, please click on our article “How to choose the correct Ajax Hub for your property”.
Besides having the capability to manage Ajax’s photo verification sensors, the Hub 2 (4G) can operate up to 100 devices. This means that you can build your system over time in phases, as your budget and requirements evolve.
Ajax Indoor sensors (PIR’s)
It is good practice for an indoor MotionProtect (sensor/PIR), to be mounted in the same room as the Hub (normally where the internet router is located). The MotionProtect then protects the Hub. It’s not necessary for a MotionProtect to be placed in every room of the house, but rather in rooms with perceived valuable items i.e. lounge/TV room, study or main bedroom. The better your outside is protected with outdoor sensors and other security layers, the fewer indoor sensors you may need.
Ajax Alarm Sirens
Ajax has two completely wireless alarm sirens to choose from.
The HomeSiren is an indoor siren that makes a loud beeping noise when the alarm is set off. This would let the intruder know that an alarm has been triggered. The HomeSiren was designed for apartments or small offices where people don’t necessarily want their neighbours to hear the siren.
The StreetSiren is what most South Africans are used to. This siren gives off a loud distress noise when the system is triggered. It is weatherproof and should be mounted outside.
The volume and duration of the siren noise can be adjusted instantly from the Ajax App for both the HomeSiren and StreetSiren.
If of course, you don’t want a siren at all, you can still just receive a siren-like noise on your phone via the Ajax App, when the alarm is triggered.
Door Contacts
The Ajax DoorProtect is a wireless magnetic door contact that trips the alarm when a door or window is opened. It is suggested to have at least a DoorProtect on your front door and back door.
Ajax Outdoor Alarm Sensors
Outdoor sensors are important in any security system design, as they can detect an intruder before they are inside your home. Ajax has currently released three wireless outdoor sensors for you to choose from. All of them have anti-masking features.
The MotionProtect Outdoors (MPO) has a 90° degree detection zone that can be adjusted between 6m and 12m. The devices can be mounted to the wall of a home or on a pole or perimeter wall “looking” back at vulnerable entry points such as doors and windows.
The DualCurtain Outdoors is perfect for protecting windows and doors along long straight walls. The narrow beams are projected left and right of the device. Each side sensor has a maximum range of 15m, giving a total of 30m coverage along a wall.
The MotionCam Outdoors has the same functionality as the MPO, but it also has a built-in camera that takes a series of 2 – 5 photos when the sensor is triggered. These photos are automatically sent to your phone via the Ajax App, which allows you to verify whether the intrusion is a threat or not.
Top tip: Don’t have outdoor sensors “pointing” over pools. The reflection from the pool can cause false alarms.
Ajax Remote SpaceControl
Although you would be controlling your Ajax system from the App on your phone most of the time, we always suggest that customers get at least one Ajax SpaceControl (remote/keyfob). The SpaceControl can act as a backup, in case your phone is damaged, lost or the battery dies. It is also useful to have a spare remote to give to guests or staff.
Ajax MultiTransmitter
If you want to upgrade your current old, wired alarm system, but don’t want to replace the wired sensors that still work well, then use the Ajax MultiTransmitter. The MultiTransmitter allows you to integrate existing wired sensors with an Ajax Hub, giving you the opportunity to create a hybrid system of both wired and wireless devices. This option saves you money and gives you the flexibility to add to the system over time.
Ready to Get Started with your Ajax System
Now that you have the basics covered, you can enhance your Ajax System as you require more functionality, such as fire protection, leak detection, and home automation.
