Most people have heard of using “layers” of security to best protect their home, which normally includes:
• A perimeter barrier such as a hedge, wall, burglar bars and electric fence. • Lighting. • Alarm sensors (outdoor and internal). • CCTV surveillance. • Armed response.
On their own, these elements are not completely effective against intruders, BUT they work well as a collective system. The barriers slow an intruder’s advance, the alarm warns you of the intrusion and the CCTV helps you to evaluate the threat while you wait for armed response to arrive. However, it is the time period that it takes for help to arrive, that most people are unprepared for. A safe room is a space where you and your family can escape to when the attackers have broken into your home. In this video Kelee Arrowsmith from ACT Person Safety talks about how to prepare a safe room and gives some very important tips on what you should keep inside it. Be prepared, don’t regret not putting these layers in place when you are facing a life-threatening situation at home.
